Montréal is an island, bordered by the St. Lawrence to the east and Rivière de Prairies to the west.

    Wastewater, from sewers, is sometimes discharged into the River untreated, carrying with it waste and numerous pollutants like medications or dangerous bacteria.

    The River is also contaminated by chemical products used in farming carried by rainwater from cultivated fields
