Joseph-Elzéar Bernier, the adventurer
The town of L’Islet, in the Chaudière-Appalaches region, is nicknamed Patrie des marins, or “land of seafarers”, since it is home to some 200 sailors, captains, pilots, ship owners, ship operators and shipbuilders! One of the most famous is Captain Joseph-Elzéar Bernier.
In the early 20th century, this navigator crossed the Atlantic 250 times before leaving to explore the Arctic and claim it for Canada.
