Located in mid-River, at the mouth of the Saguenay Fjord, this lighthouse has been dubbed “The Top”.
As far as Tadoussac, the cold waters of the Atlantic Ocean flow upriver against the current in a deep channel. There, they meet a major obstacle, the Prince Shoal.
Over less than 10 km, the River’s depth drops from 300 m to about 20 m, thereby causing the bottom layers of waters to rise to the surface. This phenomenon is called upwelling, or resurgence.
When they rise, the waters carry elements that allow algae to grow, making this area a very rich environment for many animals.
