In eastern Gaspésie, Percé bay views the Gulf of St. Lawrence through the arch of this spectacular rocky islet.
A flourishing business
In the 19th century, many families of European origin living in Gaspésie and elsewhere on the Gulf became very wealthy. The cod fishery featured heavily in their success, along with other activities.
For example, the company Mabe Brothers operated in a very wide range of economic sectors: retail sales, wood processing, shipbuilding, cargo shipping by schooner and, an oddity at the time, lobster canning.
